Clean Water for Communities in Northern Uganda

Bringing Safe Water to the Lango Sub-Region

Access to safe, clean water is still a daily struggle for many families in Northern Uganda. In the Lango Sub-region, thousands of people rely on distant and unreliable water sources. Seasonal droughts, unsafe water, and long travel distances create serious challenges for families, especially women and children.

Field of Hope is working to change this.

Through our Clean Water Project, we are expanding access to reliable and safe water by drilling community boreholes across multiple districts in the Lango Sub-region. These boreholes will provide life-saving clean water while improving health, education, and livelihoods.

Thanks to the support of generous donors and partners, this work is already transforming communities.

The Need for Clean Water

Many families in rural Northern Uganda walk more than 5 kilometers and spend over 6 hours each day searching for water.  This water is often gathered from small ponds and rivers that are contaminated.  The consequences are severe:

  • Increased risk of waterborne diseases
  • Reduced time for farming and income-generating activities
  • Children missing school to help collect water
  • Heavy physical burden placed primarily on women and girls

Providing clean water close to home restores time, health, and opportunity for entire communities.

Building on Proven Success

After a successfully drilled borehole in 2025, Field of Hope—together with our partners Wells4Wellness, Hands Around the World, and Share the Good Foundation—drilled seven additional boreholes in 2026.

These boreholes bring clean and reliable water to thousands of people across multiple districts in Northern Uganda. These new water points are helping reduce the long distances families once traveled for water and improving health and daily life in the communities we serve.

Communities Impacted

The project provides clean water to communities across several districts in the Lango Sub-region, including:

Lira District  |   Kwania District |  Dokolo District   | Amolatar District | Kole District | Oyam District

Over 3,300 households benefit

Over 21,000 people gained improved access to safe drinking water

For many families, this will mean having clean water within walking distance of their homes for the first time.

How water was sourced before

Working Together With Communities

Field of Hope believes that sustainable solutions require strong community participation. Before drilling began, engagement meetings were held with:

  • Local government leaders
  • Health inspectors
  • Community elders
  • Women, youth, and village residents
  • Village Health Teams (VHTs)

These meetings helped ensure transparency, collaboration, and local ownership of the project.

After the well is completed

Progress So Far

Project activities are already underway.

  • Eight boreholes have been successfully drilled

Families in these communities are already beginning to access clean, safe drinking water much closer to home.
