From the moment the plane landed in Uganda, I was amazed by the scenery. I was immediately greeted by a cool breeze and lush greenery stretching across the landscape. As we drove through the city, I watched the bustling streets pass by outside the car window. Women walked along the roads dressed in brightly colored fabrics, carefully balancing a variety of items on their heads.
One of my goals while in Uganda has been to step outside my comfort zone and experience the local culture, including the food. During a visit to a village in Alebtong, I quickly discovered how welcoming and hospitable the people are. They prepared a meal of fresh beans, rice, stew chicken, posho, and local vegetables for us to enjoy. I am incredibly grateful for the time, effort, and resources they sacrificed to make us feel so welcome.
My first week in Uganda was spent getting to know the Field of Hope team and exploring Lira. We also had the opportunity to visit several schools and speak with students about their agricultural projects. During these visits, I was surprised by how hands-on the students were in their daily work. Many of the responsibilities they routinely manage, such as deworming livestock and selling products at market, are skills I did not learn until I entered college.
I was amazed by the level of responsibility these students carry and the confidence with which they approach their work. Seeing their dedication firsthand gave me a deeper appreciation for the impact Field of Hope is making in these communities. It has been inspiring to witness the opportunities being created and the lives being changed through these programs.
